Anthony and Cleopatra:  Cleopatra was not just beautiful she was also brilliant. The last Phorah of Egypt, she was a master politician who could speak nine languages. She fell in love with the Roman general, Mark Anthony; whom was sent to conqueor her empire. Mark Anthony was captivated by Cleopatra’s intelligence and beauty. In spite of opposition from Rome, the two married in 36 B.C. The couple combined forces in an effort to defeat Rome. Instead, Egypt was defeated.  Believing that Cleopatra had been killed, Anthony committed suicide by falling on his sword. When Cleopatra heard of his fate, she in turn commited suicide by inducing a poisonous asp to bite her.

Abelard and Heloise:  The scholarly Abelard was studying at Notre Dame, The canon hired Abelard to tutor his niece Heloise. The two fell passionately in love and conceived a child together. The canon became furious. Fearing for her safety, Abelard sent Heloise to a convent. Thinking that Abelard meant to abandon Heloise, the cannon had Abelard castrated. Abelard would later become a monk. Heloise became a nun. However, the two continued to be in love even though it could never be.

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal:  They were both teenagers when they married. Mumtaz would give the Shah 14 children before her death.  The Shah was so grieved that he set out to build his wife a fitting monument.  Named the Taj Mahal, the monument took 20,000 men and 1.000 elephants nearly 20 years to complete. The Taj Mahal is made out of white marble. Semi precious stones are embedded in the exterior of the building. The interior is decorated with marble, lapis lazuli, turquoise, agate, and jasper.The surrounding garden contains four water channels representing the four rivers of Islamic paradise.

Robert and Elizabeth Browning:  Both  poets, they wrote letters before meeting and falling in love. Elizabeth’s father was opposed to the relationship; forcing the couple to elope and move to Italy.

John Alden and Priscilla Mullins: The first romance of the New Colonies. John and Priscilla met aboard the Mayflower. The two feel in love during their journey to the new world.

Annie Oakley and Frank Butler: Champion rifleman Frank Butler bragged that he could beat any rifleman who dared compete against him. Imagine his dismay when he was beaten by a woman, Annie Oakley.. Annie not only won the contest, she also won Frank’s heart. The two were married in 1882, Annie died in 1926. A  heart broken Frank died 18 days later. The couple were immortalized in the 1946 Irvine Berlin musical ‘Annie Get Your Gun’.
